A gem of our countryside
Exning New River
One of only 210 chalk streams worldwide.
The New River rises from chalk springs on the edge of Newmarket Heath and winds its way through the village of Exning before becoming a main river downstream of Landwade and flowing past Wicken Fen and joining the Burwell and Reach Lodes.
There are only around 210 chalk streams known in the world – meaning the New River is of international importance.
The Exning New River Association is a small group of local residents who came together in 2018 with the aim to improve and maintain the river, as well as raise awareness of river’s significance.
